Dr Monika Fazekas-Lavu

Dr Monika Fazekas-Lavu graduated from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Microbiology with Distinction. She moved to Australia in 2004 for further studies and completed the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees at the University of Sydney. Her basic physician training was completed at Concord and Nepean Hospitals. Her advanced training in Endocrinology was completed at Prince of Wales Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital. Her final year of training was in the Endocrine transplant service, supporting Heart and Lung transplant patients. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

She has an interest in lipoedema, obesity, polycystic ovarian syndrome, diabetes (Gestational diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes), thyroid disorders and osteoporosis.

She is an accredited Endocrinologist at the Mater Hospital and North Shore Private Hospitals. She is committed to providing high standard of care to her patients and supports their care during their hospital admissions. She also participates in the Endocrinology on-call roster the Mater Hospital. She is committed to teaching and supporting the staff at Mater Hospital and is involved in annual Diabetes workshop providing education for the staff.  

 

During her training years, she was involved in multiple research projects. She conducted an audit, determining if bariatric surgery was being offered to patients with Type 2 diabetes and BMI > 35 kg/m2 at Prince of Wales diabetes centre. This triggered her passion for providing care for people struggling with weight management. She also conducted a registry-based study on patients attending St Vincents' hospital Heart and lung transplant clinic to determine the prevalence of diabetes and bone disease that led to publishing her findings. 

She is a member of the Endocrine Society of Australia, Endocrine Society (an International organisation), Australian Diabetes Society, Australian and New Zealand Society of Bone and Mineral Disorders. She regularly attends national and international conferences to keep up with the latest evidence-based medicine.

Outside of medicine, Monika loves swimming, skiing, hiking and traveling with her husband and 3 children.
